Partnerships For Progress

The University of Michigan has linked with Ypsilanti Public Schools to create two dynamic summer programs. East and West Middle School students have participated in the U-M Summer Science Institute, a two-week program that introduces students to the intriguing world of science. Students donned 3-D goggles to explore a CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment), suited up to investigate the wonders of a clean room and learned how nanoscience influences daily life. The U-M also conducted a two-week Math Academy for fifth-grade students that challenged students with fractions, problem solving and math concepts. These introductory programs are expected to expand and generate more interest as math and science abilities become more critical skills for a changing workforce.
