After School Program
After school programs that target a variety of interests and educational enhancements are available in all buildings. Tutoring and skill building activities like chess, Spanish, math and vocabulary clubs are all geared toward engaging younger learners and propelling them to greater success in the classroom. The after school extracurricular menu expands in the middle schools to include physics, health and yearbook clubs and many sports programs including track, basketball, softball, soccer and volleyball. Once students reach the high school they have the option of writing for the school newspaper and the creative arts magazine, developing the content for the school yearbook, engaging in community service through the Key Club and National Honor Society and taking on challenges through the Altarum science competition, robotics, DECA business competition and many other stimulating activities. Ypsilanti High School offers a full athletic program that includes traditional sports like football, swimming, track and basketball along with tennis, golf and lacrosse. The fine arts program is noted for the exceptional student works that grace the halls of the high school and the award winning performing arts program are well known in the community and have traveled abroad to give students international exposure and an opportunity to showcase their talents to the world.
NEW AT YHS!! "WRITERS-IN-RESIDENCY"
Ypsilanti High School is pleased to announce that we have been selected as the site for launching a "Writers-in-Residency" program for YHS students in grades 9-12. Writer-in-Residency (W.I.R.P.) is an after-school program that meets weekly from now until the end of the 2007-08 school year. W.I.R.P. is sponsored by Dzanc Books and offers a unique relationship for students to work directly with a professional writer by extending a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the young writers of tomorrow. This year's 20 students are working under the leadership of creative writer/teacher Barry Graham of Dzanc Books. The chance for these students to improve their writing skills enhances not only their creative talents but their overall communication skills in all arenas.
Students are presented with the opportunity to have their creative works published by Dzanc Books at the end of the school year.
