About MEAP Scores

This is not intended to be an exhaustive review of MEAP data, but simply an overview to help you better understand how to interpret Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) test scores.

Elementary and Middle School Assessments
Elementary and middle school MEAP assessments are administered in the fall of each school year in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Retests are not offered. MEAP assessments must be taken in the appropriate grade (students must take 7th grade assessments while in 7th grade; 8th grade assessments while in 8th grade).

Each elementary and middle school MEAP content area, i.e. Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, Writing, and the integrated English language arts (ELA) assessment, has its own set of performance levels:

Level 1: Exceeded MI Standards
Level 2: Met MI Standards
Level 3: At Basic Level
Level 4: Apprentice

The optional Listening portion of the ELA has only two performance levels, "Met or Exceeded Michigan Standards" or "Did Not Meet Michigan Standards."

Elementary and middle school MEAP scores are reported as percentages, for example, a score of 42.5 means 42.5% of the students who were assessed performed at the level of achievement shown.

"Number Included"/"Number Tested" - Elementary and middle school MEAP scores are based solely on the number of "included" scores, not on the number of students who may have actually taken the test ("number tested"). "Number included" represents the number of valid tests.

To assure confidentiality of individual students, scores that represent fewer than 10 students are intentionally omitted from reports.

High School Assessments

MEAP high school assessments are offered in the spring and fall of each school year. Currently, high school students have three opportunities to participate in the assessments: in the spring of their junior year, in the fall of their senior year, and in the spring of their senior year.

High school MEAP scores are reported as raw numbers of students, not percentages. Scores are for an entire graduating class. High school MEAP scores are reported at four performance levels:

Level 1: Exceeded MI Standards
Level 2: Met MI Standards
Level 3: Basic Understanding
Level 4: Apprentice

A student attaining a performance level of 1, 2, or 3 on a MEAP High School assessment will receive a subject area endorsement on their High School diploma for that subject.

The number shown represents the highest level of achievement for this number of students after all retest opportunities (students may have taken the high school MEAP assessments multiple times).
