NONDISCRIMINATION AND EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

The Board of Education does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, age, height, weight, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, genetic information, or any other legally protected characteristic, in its programs and activities, including employment opportunities.

The Superintendent shall appoint a compliance officer whose responsibility it will be to ensure that Federal and State regulations are complied with and that any inquiries or complaints are dealt with promptly in accordance with law. S/He shall also ensure that proper notice of nondiscrimination for Title II, Title VI, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendment Act of 1972, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is provided to students, their parents, staff members, and the general public. Any sections of the District's collectively-bargained, negotiated agreements dealing with hiring, promotion, and tenure need to contain a statement of nondiscrimination similar to that in the Board's statement above. In addition, any gender-specific terms should be eliminated from such contracts

Zero Tolerance Policy

Drugs - Weapons - Dress Code
The Ypsilanti Public Schools Board of Education complies with the Drug-Free Workplace Act and Weapons-Free Schools law, and as such, hereby gives notice that students must comply with the Board adopted Code of Conduct and that the use, possession, distribution and/or sale of drugs and other illegal substances is prohibited on the grounds, transportation vehicles and in the buildings of the Ypsilanti Public Schools.

The possession of a weapon on school property or threats of harm are also prohibited. This includes school buses. Students found to be in violation of these rules subject themselves to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from Ypsilanti schools and other Michigan public schools. Further, students and parents should be aware that all district rules contained in the Student Code of Conduct apply enroute to and from school, during school and all schoolrelated functions.

The school district has a dress code in place and there will be a renewed emphasis this school year for all students to adhere consistently to the guidelines set forth in the district's' Student Code of Conduct. Clothing worn by students that is unacceptable during the school day includes sagging or baggy jeans or pants, tank tops, midriff tops, mini-skirts, tops with spaghetti string straps, and/or any type of head covering unless it has been approved for religious reasons. A copy of the Student Code of Conduct will be distributed at the start of the school year and parents will be asked to read, sign and return the form in the front of the booklet indicating that it has been read and the anticipated consequences understood.

The school district is committed to the participation of parents and students with disabilities in its programs, services and activities. If you need some form of reasonable accommodations to make your participation possible, please contact the administrator responsible for the program/event/activity. To help ensure we are able to provide the particular accommodation you require, please contact us several days in advance.
