Ypsilanti Public Schools Board of Education, in compliance with a state mandate, approved a Wellness Policy for the district. Many of the menu changes began last year in preparation for the installation of the new policy for all public schools. Multigrain breads, a balanced choice program, more fruit offerings and salads made with romaine lettuce are some of the improved food plans for the elementary students. Middle school and high school students will also see changes to reflect healthy choices that include fresh and frozen fruit snacks and balanced choice stations that will offer steamed vegetables and fresh grill choices. Vending machines will reflect the new wellness emphasis with regular soda pop replaced by juices, water, milk, yogurt and other healthy selections. These changes are expected to have a positive impact on the physical and mental well being of our students.
