District first place MLK Jr. essay winners were guests at the annual EMU President's Luncheon, Jan. 21. YPS staff and board of education members were also in attendance.

Chapelle Community School Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Chapelle Community School hosted an MLK Jr. Day assembly, Friday, Jan. 18,  in observance of the holiday that honors the  late Civil Rights leader. All grade levels performed musical selections, under the direction of music teacher, Brian Buckmaster and special guest appearances included: William Hayes, director of the Ypsilanti Youth Orchestra; Ruth Jordan, YPS Director of Student Support Services impersonating abolitionist Sojourner Truth;  YPS paraeducator Steve Dixon gave a rousing rendition of King's "I Have a Dream" speech. The Ann Arbor News (Monday, Jan. 21 edition "Lessons, creativity honor King") and the Ypsilanti Courier covered the event.

Erickson Elementary School Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Erickson Elementary School in Ypsilanti presented their annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sing Along on January 18. Children sang freedom and patriotic songs and district winners of the Martin Luther King writing and art contest presented their work. Erickson boasted 29 district winners, more than any other school.
