Ypsilanti Public Schools athletic program to join new league

Administrators for Ypsilanti Public Schools have finalized the decision to join the South Eastern Conference (S.E.C.) athletic league with the start of the 2009-10 school year. The district is now part of the MEGA conference and will participate in that league for the remainder of the current school year.

John Fulton, Executive Director of Human Resources and one of the officials assigned by the district to investigate the change, said there were a number of factors that contributed to the switch. One of the major reasons was the summer exodus of over a dozen teams from the MEGA Conference, plus others that are anticipating leaving the league. Monroe Public Schools also will make the move at the same time as Ypsilanti.

There are multiple reasons that we made the decision to join the S.E.C., Fulton said. We will now play schools that are generally in close proximity to our district, reducing travel time and costs plus allowing more parents and fans to support away games. We are looking forward to playing schools like Lincoln, Chelsea and Dexter next year in the S.E.C.

Fulton said he was also impressed with the academic component built into the S.E.C. that promotes the importance of achievement and the development of leadership skills. He said all the district athletic directors are in support of the move.
