March is Reading Month

"Book A Cop" Coming to Ypsilanti Public Schools
There's no jail time or fingerprinting involved in "Book a Cop," only a month long promotion of literacy. Members of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, including Sheriff Jerry Clayton, will spend the month of March volunteering to read to Ypsilanti Public Schools' first grade students. The activity is part of "March is Reading Month" celebrations.

Corporal Charles Ball of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is spearheading the effort and said the objective is to build relationships while promoting the importance of reading.

"We want students to feel comfortable with law enforcement personnel and this is one way to build a positive rapport with some of our youngest citizens," Ball said. "Our office is focusing on community engagement and this is a tangible way to connect with kids."

Following are the dates, times and locations that the Sheriff's staff will read and participate in classroom activities:
Chapelle Community School - Thursdays, March 4, 11, 18, 25 from 10-11 a.m. (Sheriff. Clayton will visit March 25)

Besides the Sheriff, a variety of staff will be involved including deputies, command officers, dispatchers, correction officers, Derrick Jackson, director of Community Engagement, and community service officers. For more information call: Sgt. King (734) 260-3197.

More March Activities
Chapelle Community School-Family Movie Night is 6 p.m. March 16 which will include a raffle for gift certificates to the school's Book Fair, March 15-19. EMU basketball players will also visit several times during the month to read and talk to the students about the importance of literacy.

Attendance Policy Reminder!
Did you know that signing your student out of school (before the final bell rings) counts as a tardy? According to our school and district policies, these add together
toward unexcused absences. It can also take away from precious time when students are working on academics or on community building work in their classrooms. Please refer to our school attendance policy posted in the front entry way or to your school handbook given at the beginning of the school year for further details.

Reminder to parents:
When you have a change in your phone number, it's imperative that you update your phone number with your child's school. A phone number is critical for contacting parents/guardians when a child is sick, has an emergency, missed the school bus or has an unexcused absence.  An undated phone number also assures parents that they will receive important information through our automated phone system regarding school closings, special events or message from the Superintendent. Thank you for keeping the home-school connection current.
