George Alternative School is a day treatment program for Emotionally Impaired students who live in Washtenaw County. The program is staffed and administered by Ypsilanti Public Schools in cooperation with the Washtenaw Intermediate School District.
Students at George Alternative School receive the support, individual attention, small class size and therapeutic intervention to substantiate their educational growth.
Most students remain in the program for at least one full school year and the goal for all students is to return to their home school district when they are able to succeed in a less restrictive environment. The school has five classrooms, kindergarten through twelth grade, and is limited to 10 students per class.
A select group of students at George Alternative School have the distinction of participating in the teen version of C.E.R.T., Community Emergency Response Team. Students are being taught the appropriate way to handle and help in an emergency situation and the training is provided through a Homeland Security Grant.
Middle school students participate in the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Program where students showcase a number of oratory skills including drama, storytelling, poetry and informative/persuasive speeches.
