Notes from the Counseling Department (PDF) Form

All Students
Students interested in participating in the ACT-SO competition can pick up applications in the IRC area (lower level gym hallway) beginning March 14, 2008. Applications must be returned to the IRC by April 2, 2008. Contact Jerilyn Smith (714-1083) for more information.

9th, 10th, and 11th Grade Students

The high school will begin the registration process for selecting courses for the 2008/09 school year soon. Counselors will be delivering course selection materials to students and discussing courses, graduation requirements, and options with all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders the week of March 17th. Course selection sheets should be completed, brought home for parent review, and returned to the school BY MARCH 28th. It is very important that you discuss possible classes with your child and help them select appropriate classes. Please contact your child's counselor if you have questions.

Seniors
All seniors need to monitor their class progress and continue to work diligently throughout the 2nd semester. With the 4th marking period over and the fact seniors get out of school on May 23rd, this leaves only about 10 weeks left of school. It is critical all seniors realize the importance of this time frame. If you have concerns about any class please contact their teachers immediately.

Scholarships are continually posted in the counseling office, as well as on our web-site. Seniors should stop by regularly to see what opportunities are available. Many local scholarships are now posted and due dates are fast approaching. Also, students can use web based scholarship searches like www.fastweb.com and www.wiredscholars.com.

Seniors and Juniors
For the 4th year we will be hosting the "Make it Count" assemblies for seniors and juniors on Wednesday, April 2nd. This presentation provides college and other post-high school information to our students. The program is unique and pertinent to each grade level. Parents are welcome to attend. Contact the counseling office for more information.

Juniors
Just a reminder - all juniors will have taken (by this mailing) the MME test March 11 th, 12th, and 13th. Results of the ACT portion should be mailed to the student's home in approximately 6 - 8 weeks. The other Michigan components will not be received to the district until the summer.

In addition to the MME, college bound students are able to register for other national ACT or SAT test dates. The spring testing dates for ACT and SAT are:
ACT testing dates: June 14th (register by May 9th)
SAT testing dates: May 3rd (register by April 1st)
June 7th (register by May 6th)

All Students
Tutoring opportunities after school will continue into 2nd semester. Besides individual teachers, there are also several different groups providing tutoring for our students. A list of the tutoring times can be picked up in the counseling office. We encourage students to take advantage of these opportunities if they need help in their classes.

The YHS Counseling Dept. continues to partner with the EMU Guidance and Counseling Department to offer one-on-one counseling during the school day. Graduate students in the final stages of their counseling program will be available to offer weekly counseling sessions to interested students. This will be on a limited basis and will require student and parent approval. If you would like more information on this program please contact the Counseling Dept.

Scheduling for the 2008/09 school year will begin soon. Students will be receiving their course selection sheets in February. It is important to complete and return this form to the counseling office on time. This will then allow time for data input and beginning the process of developing the master schedule. Counselors will be presenting information to all students during February.
